About MASTEP
The Mathematics and Science Teacher Enhancement Project (MASTEP) addresses the professional development needs of middle school mathematics and science teachers in rural, Northeastern Oklahoma. During the three-year project, six mathematics and six science graduate level courses will be developed and field-tested to better prepare teachers to teach mathematics or science at the middle school level. MASTEP will enable teachers to master the subject matter competencies they need to teach math or science at the middle school level, to increase their ability to teach math and science using reformed based methods, and to form a community of math and science educators in Northeastern Oklahoma that will promote and sustain reform based math and science education on a long term basis. Each summer participants will take two mathematics courses or two science courses during an intensive four-week program and will develop an instructional plan that they will implement the following school year. MASTEP personnel will support the implementation of the plan. The project will serve approximately 150 teachers over a three-year period. In addition, a local professional organization (the Northeastern Oklahoma Mathematics and Science Teacher Association) will be initiated and facilitated by project personnel in order to provide continuing support for participants and to provide opportunities for participants to impact other teachers in the area. This project is funded through a Teacher Enhancement Grant from the National Science Foundation.
Goals of the Project
Eligible Participants
- Enable middle level math and science teachers to master the subject matter competencies they need to teach their subject matter at the middle school level using reform based methods.
- Increase the ability of middle school teachers to teach math and science using reform based methods.
- Form a community of math and science educators in Northeastern Oklahoma that will promote and sustain reform based math and science education on a long-term basis.
Participants should meet the following criteria:
If you have questions concerning your eligibility, please contact Dr. April Adams, Program Director.
- Be a teacher of mathematics or science at the middle school level (typically grades 6, 7, or 8, although these grade levels may vary in some schools);
- Demonstrate a need for additional content knowledge in mathematics or science. You are particularly encouraged to apply if you
- Do not hold a B.S. in Mathematics or Mathematics Education and are teaching mathematics, OR
- Do not hold a B.S. in Science or Science Education and are teaching science.
- Agree to continue participation during the following school by implementing the curriculum modifications developed during the summer and submitting a final report concerning the effects of your implementation.

Sample Schedule of Classes for the M.Ed. in Science Education Pogram
The Master of Education Degrees in Science Education and in Mathematics Education have been approved. This program is designed for K-6 teachers and 6-12 mathematics and science teachers. Dr. April Adams is the Program Chair for the M.Ed. in Science Education and Dr. Deborah Carment is the Program Chair for the M.Ed. in Mathematics Education. Please contact them concerning these programs. Both of the programs will require you to be accepted by the NSU Graduate College. Please contact the Graduate College for an application if you have not already been accepted. To file a degree plan or change your current degree plan, contact Dr. Adams or Dr. Carment. Each degree plan will be tailored for the needs of the individual graduate student. MASTEP courses be most likely part of the degree plans for K-8 teachers who do not hold B.S. in Science Education or in Mathematics Education. If you have been a MASTEP participant and you want your MASTEP courses to count toward this degree, you must see Dr. Adams or Dr. Carment immediately because there is a limit to the number of courses that can be taken before reaching candidacy. A description of the programs follow. Do not enroll in courses without consulting an advisor. The coursework might not be part of your particular degree plan.
