NSU-NSTA News

Shannon White - Publicity/Newsletter

This is by far the latest this newsletter has ever been. I completely forgot about it. Hopefully I can get the next newsletter out on time. But, better late than never I guess.

I would like to thank our president Amanda Bennett for all of her hard work this semester with our speakers. I have gained a lot of information and helpful hints from the speakers she has linded up. There is one downfall though. None of our NSU-NSTA members are attending the meetings, so when our speakers show up they are only presenting to 2 or 3 students. These are very busy teachers and administrators and I would like for them to feel welcome. If the time is still an issue we can work on changing that again. Or if cutting down the number of meetings to maybe only one or two a semester would help let us know.

Our next meeting is April 7th at 3:00pm. We will have principals from local schools to speak with us about the hiring process. Dr. Migliorino from Tahlequah High School, Mr. Garrett from Tahlequah Jr High and Mr. Barlow from Sequoyah Elementary will be our speakers. T-shirts will also be available at the meeting for $12.

Also for may we are making stress relief bags again but we need help. If any of you could find donations from buisnesses it would really help promote our organization.

State Classrooms Gain 226 National Board Certified Teachers® in 2003

Oklahoma Ranks Eighth Nationally

State Superintendent Sandy Garrett announced today that an additional 226 teachers in Oklahoma have earned their profession’s top credential this year by achieving National Board Certification. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) reports that with the new certificates, the state now has 858 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) – the eighth highest number in the nation.

"Oklahomans can be proud that so many teachers are seeking advanced credentials with application fee and bonus funding provided by the state Legislature," Garrett said. "A great teacher is not only an educator for life, but also a lifelong learner. The National Board process is both an evaluation of teaching and a learning process for teachers. This translates into better teachers in our classrooms and recognition of Oklahoma educators’ professionalism throughout our state and nation."

Oklahoma ranks 8th in the total number of teachers achieving National Board Certification in the United States. The top ten states are: North Carolina (6,641), Florida (4,940), South Carolina (3,225) California, (2,644), Ohio (2,172), Mississippi (1,761), Georgia (1,323), Oklahoma (858), Illinois (824), and Alabama (632).

The full directory of teachers receiving National Board Certification can be found at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Web site.

What started as a nationally significant incentive program, first adopted and funded by the state Legislature in 1997, has resulted in  a large number of teachers applying for participation and achieving this prestigious certification. Details:

  • Teachers may apply directly to the NBPTS for national certification.  Questions on portfolios, assessment centers, scoring, and other related issues can be answered by calling 1-800-22TEACH.
  • National Board Certified teachers instructing classes in Oklahoma are eligible for the $5,000 bonus for up to ten years.
  • Application fees and a $200 stipend to help with related expenses is available from the state for 200 Oklahoma candidates annually. Teachers can apply in February to become part of Oklahoma’s support system that helps teachers through the nine-month peer-review process toward national certification.  Training opportunities are offered to participants who also can network with other applicants through the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation, 4545 N. Lincoln Boulevard, Suite 275, Oklahoma City, OK 73105-3418, or call (405) 525-2612.

In 1998, the “Quality Counts” report published by Education Week ranked Oklahoma’s state requirements number one nationally in “Quality of Teaching Standards,” giving Oklahoma the only A in the category.   In 1999, The National Education Goals Panel rated Oklahoma as one of the top states in the nation in terms of the percent of teachers certified in their content area.   In 2003, Oklahoma was sixth best in its efforts to improve teacher quality, according to the “Quality Counts” report.
