How do I become a member?
To become a member of the Northeastern State University Band all you have to do is enroll in MUS 3611 as if it were a normal academic class. Future members should fill out the interest form so that Dr. Wika has your contact information and can send you critical information about band camp and the fall performance schedule.
When does the band rehearse?
In the fall semester, the marching band rehearses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:00–5:00. In the spring, the wind ensemble rehearses Monday through Thursday from 3:00–3:50 and the concert band rehearses Monday and Wednesday from 4:00–4:50.
Are there extra rehearsals?
The Marching Band has a preseason camp that takes place the week before school starts. The Marching Band also has dress rehearsals in the stadium on the mornings of home games. Percussion and Color Guard also have one sectional per week. No other extra rehearsals are scheduled.
Will I have enough time to be in the band?
Many students who join the Northeastern Band find that they spent more time in rehearsals in high school than in college. If you could manage your schedule in high school you will have no problem fitting band into your schedule at college.
What is the cost?
The cost of participating in the band is modest. Students will pay tuition for one hour credit to be in the band. In addition, students must purchase a few items such as shoes, band t-shirt, etc. These are usually one time purchases and total less than $75.00.
Are scholarships available?
Scholarships are available for any student who participates in the band regardless of their major. More information about band scholarships.
How do I audition for a band scholarship?
Students may schedule an audition with Dr. Wika at any time throughout the year, although early auditions have the best chance of getting scholarship awards. Students should be able to play a prepared piece of music that highlights their musicianship. All-District or All-State Honor Band audition pieces or solos are perfect for the occasion.
Do I have to be a music major to be in the band?
No. Students from all different academic backgrounds are welcome in the band.
Does the band travel?
Occasionally, the band has the opportunity to travel to some out of town football games. These are handled on a case by case basis.
Are there school owned instruments I can use?
Marching brass and percussion are provided as well as some concert woodwind instruments. The university has a limited inventory available for students to check out instruments. If you have a particular instrument need contact Dr. Wika.
