Online surveys

The use of email surveys is becoming more popular. As Institutional Review Board, we start seeing more and more applications where a survey instrument is posted on a website. Popular sites include SurveyMonkey. From a protection point of view, we do have some concerns about using third party software. Fortunately, we have a good alternative at NSU. On the server http://survey.nsuok.edu , we host our own survey software. For NSU researchers, this offers two advantages: the use of this software is free and there are no restrictions on number of responses. SurveyMonkey limits the number of free responses to 100, and advanced features such as encryption are only available in the paid for version.

If you are interested in using our own NSU server to conduct an online survey, contact Rick Shelton at sheltorw@nsuok.edu or x 3783 to set up a free account. Students will need to have their faculty sponsor send an email to request their account to be set up. To learn how the system works, you can watch videos at http://www.checkbox.com/training/ or attend workshops that are offered regularly through the Center of Teaching and Learning. You can find the "Online Survey Creation" opportunities at http://ctl.nsuok.edu/drupal/?q=event/.

IF YOU PLAN TO DO AN ELECTRONIC SURVEY, AND YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION ELECTRONICALLY BY ATTACHING YOUR APPLICATION TO AN EMAIL, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO INCLUDE A LINK TO YOUR SURVEY SO WE CAN SEE THE SURVEY AS YOU PLAN TO ADMINISTER IT.
