Catalog Description of
Course: A study of mathematical concepts for the elementary education
major using tactile models and appropriate technology. Topics include:
Rational numbers and their operations, integers and their operations, and
statistics and probability. No major or minor credit in mathematics.
Prerequisites: Math 1473 or Math 1513
No textbook is required. Materials will be available
in the classroom for use during class. It is highly recommended that
either kits constructed by the student or materials purchased commercially be
available for use outside of class.
Expected
Course Outcomes:
The student will demonstrate the
ability to … a) think and reason mathematically, b) apply mathematical
concepts, structures, and procedures, c) solve mathematical problems, d)
identify, interpret, and create representations of mathematical concepts,
structures, and procedures, and e) communicate mathematical ideas.
Additionally, the student will understand and appreciate the nature and history
of mathematics and the role of mathematics in society.

Grades will be based upon two written
exams, one oral exam, written assignments and quizzes, classroom activities and
class participation, and a comprehensive final examination. These
components will be evaluated to constitute the final grade as follows:

Instructor’s expectations on
attendance, assignments, and examinations:
Students are expected to attend class regularly, to have completed all assignments before coming to class, and to be prepared and ready to participate in class.
Assignments should be completed and ready to be submitted at the beginning of class. Penalty for late assignments: 15% after the first day and 25% after the next class session; no assignment will be accepted two weeks from due date without prior consent of the instructor.
Only extenuating circumstances should prevent a student from taking an announced exam. No student will be allowed to make up an exam unless the student has contacted the instructor either prior to or within 24 hours following the exam. Missed exams are expected to be made up prior to returning to class.
Students absent for an officially sponsored university event will not be penalized for missed assessments but will be expected to make up all assignments and exams in a timely manner.

Inclement Weather Policy:
During times of inclement weather, decisions concerning day classes will be made by 6:00 a.m. in order for the media to be notified and for students to receive the announcement in a timely manner.
