Oklahoma Middle School Certification

The supply of secondary teachers in mathematics, nationally as well as regionally, is falling far short of demand.  A teacher with certification in middle level or secondary school mathematics can find a job in about any locale of the nation in which they want to reside.  The shortage of teachers with certification in mathematics is so severe that many large districts are recruiting teachers from Europe. Asia, and Central and South America.

Oklahoma certification in middle school mathematics is attainable solely upon passing a state Middle Level/Intermediate Mathematics Test.

Pre-service elementary education majors who meet the following criteria are good candicates for seeking and attaining Oklahoma certification in middle level mathematics.

  • four years of high school mathematics
  • any college level mathematics courses
  • an A in at least one modeling course here at NSU
  • successful completion of Math 3413  Modeling:  Geometry and Measurement
  • an interest and aptitude in mathematics
  • a desire to teach mathematics at the middle level
Any NSU student interested in taking the Oklahoma Middle Level/Intermediate Mathematics Test may want to consider taking a 3 hr. course designed to supplement the formal mathematics preparation of an elementary education major to better prepare the individual to effectively teach the mathematics content in most middle level curriculums as well as to successfully pass the required Oklahoma examination.

The class, Math 4583 Concepts in Middle School Mathematics, is scheduled for the spring 2005 semester at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the Tahlequah campus.  For questions concerning this course, please feel free to contact Dr. Wyatt.

Graphing calculators will be utilized in the class.  The instructor will be using a TI-83 Plus.  If a student has another brand of graphing calculator and either a working knowledge of the calculator or an instruction manual for the calculator, then there will be no problem in using a brand different from the instructor's.
