Welcome

The James I. and George L. Winn Memorial War Archive was established and founded over the summer of 2004 by Dr. Sharon Winn as a tribute to members of her family who had served their country and as an ongoing repository for the stories, histories, information and memorabilia of all veterans, but more specifically, those of North Eastern Oklahoma.

We welcome all veterans to peruse the Archive site and to make suggestions and comments on how this ongoing project may be made better. We also encourage veterans to contact us for information on how they may contribute to this archive through the donation of personal histories, anecdotal information, documents, time, and resources.

Please feel free to contact us with your questions and we will do our best to answer them on a timely basis.


Mission Statement:

The James I. and George L. Winn/Jake Chanate Memorial War Archive is dedicated to
honoring military personnel from Oklahoma and other areas who have
served in U.S. wars or conflicts since the Civil War. The archive
collects and preserves letters, memoirs, diaries, memorabilia, and
other items pertaining to war experiences and makes these materials
available to scholars, veterans, and the public as instructed by the
donors of the materials. The Archive also makes information available
through the internet and supports an interdisciplinary scholarly
journal pertaining to war. The mission of the Archives is to serve the
people of Oklahoma and the nation by providing a center for war studies
for both the general public and scholars.

Update: 9 March, 2007
 
  Two new sections will be added this next week: Letters from 'Stan and Letters from Ira'. These will be forums where letters and emails from active duty servicepersons who are in Afghanistan and/or Iraq theaters of operation can be posted for the general population to read. If you have a serviceperson that you think might like to submit to these forums, please send them our email address, nsu3606a@mail.nsuok.edu , and ask them to put the sentence "Letters from Stan" or "Letters from Ira" in the subject line. Let's keep the profanity down, please, as this is an open forum for the public to read. Also, pictures can be placed in the entry if they will keep them small. We'd love to have their input.

  Also, if they have memorabilia from their tours of duty they would like to submit to the Archive, we'd love to have them. They can be sen to:

These donations will be stored in the project office, Seminary Hall 358, and may be viewed by appointment. We will be posting a listing of materials currently in the collection as soon as we can get someone to do the database design and data entry. (If you live in the area and have these skills, we could really use the volunteer help...)

Update: 16 February, 2007

With the passing of Northeastern State University's Veterans Affairs Representative, Jake Chanate, the governing board of the War Archive decided to honor this veteran by adding his name to the official title of our project. Our condolences go to his family and community. He will be remembered as a beloved brother-in-arms and a tireless advocate for all veterans.

Update: 16 February, 2007

There is now a Digital Audio Recorder available in our office, Seminary Hall 358, that may be checked out overnight for the recording of information and responses to the questionaires that we work from. The DAT data will be put on a CD and placed in the file of the individual donating their memories to the project. These recordings will be eventually converted to PODcasts and made available online for those researching veterans stories, but only with the written permission of the donor.

We are asking all North East Oklahoma veterans to participate in our project by requesting one of our questionaire packets and filling out the forms enclosed. Memorabilia a veteran wishes to donate to the archive will be gratefully accepted also. So far we have been blessed with gifts of personal photograph albums, burial flags, combat ribbons and flags, "cruise" books, and a variety of other items that were collected during the tours of duty of those participating in our project so far. Further information may be had by contacting either Tony O'seland or Dr. Sharon Winn.

We would like to encourage veterans to submit their war stories for our online journal "Incoming! A Journal of War Experiences." Submissions should be typed and printed, or may be submitted by email to Incoming! by clicking on this link and putting the words "Incoming Submission" in the subject line. We use Microsoft Word as our standard word processing package, so submission need to be in either .rtf (Rich Text Format) or MSWord format please. We hope to have enough submissions to go to print by the end of April, 2007 for our first issue.
