CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
A study of the federal regulations dealing with the control, storage and disposal of hazardous wastes. Emphasis is placed on source reduction, recycling, and treatment methods.
COURSE PURPOSE:
Students will have a working knowledge of the federal regulatory requirements for management of hazardous wastes and will appreciate the significant regulatory and economic benefits of a successful pollution prevention program. Students will explore current and future hazardous waste recycling and treatment methods.
EXPECTED COURSE OUTCOMES:
Students will be expected to achieve the following objectives:
1. Review the EPA's requirements for determination of hazardous wastes.
2. Discuss general requirements for all generators of hazardous waste and the differences for each generator category, conditionally exempt, small and large.

Textbook (Required): Wentz, Charles A., Hazardous Waste Management, 2nd Ed., McGraw-Hill, Inc., New York, 1995.
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
The expected course outcomes will be realized through a variety of instructional strategies to complement students' life experiences. Those strategies include, but are not limited to, the following: expository-discussion, demonstration, inquiry, and group activities.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES: (Attendance/Punctuality)
Consistent and punctual attendance is both expected and required for your successful completion of the course. Absences will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Death or grave illness in the family, childbirth, impassable roads are of course beyond our control. Decisions to celebrate anniversaries, for example, or attend concerts, go on hunting safaris, or participate in a variety of extra-curricular affairs are not. Students will be expected to make up any work missed as a result of absence, whether or not the absence was justified. Unannounced Pop Quizzes may not be made up. Excessive absences and will reduce the final grade for the course. Each unexcused absence will result in a corresponding 5% reduction of the student's overall course average.
ASSIGNMENT DUE DATES:
Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the date indicated when the assignment is given. After the assignment due date, work will be accepted up to one week late with a corresponding grade reduction of one letter grade. Reading assignments are considered preparation for the lecture period. The student is responsible for all material assigned even if not discussed in class. Quizzes over assignments may be given without prior announcement.
STUDENT EVALUATION:
Grades will be based upon formal written examinations, a research paper and oral presentation, meaningful class discussion/participation and the final exam.

1. Your final grade will be based on your overall course average as follows:
90 - 100% A
80 - 89% B
70 - 79% C

2. The final examination will be administered at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, 2001.
4. Students may visit with the professor about their performance during normally scheduled office hours and by appointment.
