Course Objectives To introduce the student to the workplace and provide meaningful professional experience.
Grading Final course grades will be assigned on the basis of the intern’s employer evaluations and the timely completion and submission of well-written, required reports. Grading will be on a pass (P) or fail (F) basis.
Preparation Coordinator approval is required, prior to registration, for all students wishing to take Finance Internship or Accounting Internship. No credit will be assigned in the absence of prior agreement among coordinator, student, and employer. Students will be expected to secure employment approved by the coordinator, obtain and complete all required forms, register for the appropriate course, and pay all applicable fees. Students should inform employers that there is an employer agreement that must be completed and signed in order to secure academic credit for the internship. The student is responsible for ensuring that employers are fully aware of their responsibilities under the internship agreement. All forms must be completed prior to beginning the actual internship.
Academic credit is given at the discretion
of the coordinator. Students should meet
with the coordinator and fully familiarize themselves with the course
requirements.
Finance Internship (FIN 4953, 4956) may not be used as a FIN or
FIN/ECON/ACCT elective. Accounting
Internship (ACCT 4953, 4956) may not be use as an ACCT elective.
Required Reports
Each intern is required to submit the following: Internship Application, Employer Agreement Form, and tow Supervisor Evaluations (one at mid-term and one at the end of the internship). In addition, the following reports are required:
1. Weekly journal/work schedule – Interns will be required to maintain a weekly journal that describes the week’s activities. Entries should include learning experiences, problems which arose and how they were resolved, training activities, discussions with supervisors and co-workers, personal impressions, and other relevant information. In addition, all counseling sessions, reprimands, or acknowledgements should be reported. All entries should be typed and will be submitted at the beginning of the following week.
2. Corporate history – Interns should acquire a history of the company from discussions with fellow employees and information provided by the employer. A brief (no more than three pages) report that summarizes this information will be turned in after two weeks to three weeks of employment.
3. Corporate culture – During the second half of the internship, the intern should write a brief (no more than three pages) analysis of the corporate culture of the company of employment. This report should address the “personality” of the company. It should include such issues as dress codes, working relationships among employees, work ethic, rigidity or flexibility of corporate policies, and other issues that relate to the ambience of the work environment. The report will be turned in the next to the last week of the internship.
4. Special project – The intern should, in a brief (no more than three pages) report, discuss a problem encountered on the job specifically related to the field of finance or accounting. The report should include a statement of the problem, discussion of alternate solutions, and a description of the solution followed by the intern. The report will be turned in the next to the last week of the internship.
5. Intern evaluation – Upon completion of the internship, interns will submit a personal evaluation of the internship experience. A standard form for this report will be provided by the coordinator.
