Women end regular season in fashion
Verressa Gaston, Fort Gibson senior, scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Northeastern State earned a share of the Lone Star Conference North Division title with a 65-57 victory over East Central at the Kerr Activity Center Saturday afternoon.
The RiverHawks (16-11) used a 21-7 run over a 10-minute span in the first half to build a 30-14 lead. NSU led 30-19 at the half.
The RiverHawks held the Tigers to just 23 percent on 6-of-26 shooting from the field and 2-of-12 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
East Central reeled off a 9-0 spurt over a three-minute span to start the final stanza to cut the deficit to just two points at 30-28. ECU’s Lacey Goldwire led the second half surge with 17 of her game high 24 points coming in the final half.
The RiverHawks, however, held on to the lead and never trailed to pick up the victory in the regular season finale.
NSU will be the No. 2 North seed in the upcoming LSC Tournament and UCO will be the No. 1 North seed by virtue of its record against the LSC South. A tiebreaker was used to determine seeding purposes.
