pre-school and adult classes are also held here.

Dr. John Unger (middle) with a couple of teachers who are involved and committed to improving and spreading Hani literacy.

A lady working her garden about a mile up the mountain from the village of Goungma.

A pig and a dog relaxing on the front stoop of a house in Goungma, a Hani village in the Ailao Mountains near the town of Luchen.

A class in the village of Bahku. The
students wore their best for the photographs.

Mr. Bai has co-written a Hani dictionary with a well known American Anthropologist and Linguist, Dr. Paul Lewis. Dr. Unger uses some of Dr. Lewis's and Mr. Bai's translations of Akha and Hani myths in the Middle School lessons.

Hani orthography is on the board. This is a Romance alphabet. The "l" at the end of the word signifies a high tone, a "q" a low tone.

The village of Baku is near the town of Jenhong, which is on the Mekong River, relatively near the Burmese border. The village is in the Wooliang Mountains. Tea and rubber are primary crops. Dr. Unger uses rubber trees from this village as a lesson plan.
