CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Structure and activities of the seed plants with a short survey of the vegetable kingdom.

PREREQUISITES

General Botany is a freshman level introductory course; there are no prerequisites. This course is required for all Biology majors and serves as a prerequisite for higher level Biology courses.

Biology of Plants 5th edition Peter Raven, Ray F. Evert, and Susan Eichhorn

OUTSIDE READINGS

You will be assigned readings from periodicals available in the NSU library. Information from the readings is considered test material.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

General Botany serves as a cornerstone for upper level Botany and Biology courses and is required for Biology Education majors. At the conclusion of this basic introduction to plant science the student should have learned:

1. The importance of plants to other living organisms and their role in the environment.

2. The basic processes of plant growth and development

3. Environmental effects on plant growth

4. Fundamental aspects of plant anatomy and morphology.

5. Organization, diversity, and unity of the plant kingdom.

COURSE FORMAT

The information will be presented a lectures, slides, and class discussions. The sequence of topics will closely follow the syllabus. Chapters and pages within those chapter to be read will be announced in class.



ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is expected in this course. Unannounced quizzes will be given in class and you must be take the quiz. In class assignments can also be expected.

CLASSROOM POLICIES

There is no food or drink allowed in room 317. Problems caused by inclement weather will be announced on local radio and television stations. Any student with special needs should talk to the instructor during the first week of class.

EXAMS AND GRADING

Evaluation of your performance will be based upon exam scores and assignments. The exams will normally have multiple choice and essay sections. Each student must turn in an unopened package of scantron forms at the beginning of the semester.

THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WITHOUT PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS

Grades will be determined upon TOTAL points accumulated during the semester. The 90% = A scale will be followed.
