About me

My name is Barbara Hutchison. I am the Internship Coordinator for the NSU School Counseling program and teach both developmental psychology and school counseling courses.

Understanding development and its cultural variations is essential to the preparation of the school counselor who meets the ASCA and Oklahoma state mandate to serve ALL students. Differences in life experiences influence the expression of language, self-perception and physical competence. Urban schools and rural schools experience issues that are similar as well as those that are specific to their particular setting. Counselors must be able to identify important issues and needs of the community they serve and develop programs to meet those needs.

Most of the graduate classes I teach include a community services learning component, designed to allow counseling students to gain experience in real world settings.
