CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

 

This course introduces students to a theoretical framework for analyzing programs and organizations utilizing knowledge, values, and skills of generalist social work practice. Concentration will be on social work practice occurring with programs, communities and organizations. Restricted to Social Work Majors.  

 

COURSE PURPOSE:

 

This third practice course is taken concurrently with practicum and provides students with a generalist social work practice framework that can be used in working with organizations, programs and communities.  The goal of this course is to provide basic knowledge, values and skills for generalist social work practice in organizations and communities. Students will receive a broad based knowledge of social work agency networks; learn about professional relationships characterized by mutuality, collaboration and respect for client systems; and develop organization and program assessment knowledge and skills.  Resource comprehension of external funding application will be addressed. Theoretical macro practice concepts will be examined in various personal, professional and organizational capacities.   


EXPECTED COURSE OUTCOMES
:

 

Student learning will focus on the knowledge, values, and skills related to the following:

 

1.         Demonstrate the ability to design, implement and evaluate, organizational and community macro generalist practice by utilizing various theories and models of program development.

 

2.         Comprehend and critique current existing external funding resources that are proposed to enhance the quality of social services for oppressed populations.

 

3.         Demonstrate research knowledge and skills in proposed program change designed to improve the quality of service provision to oppressed populations.

 

4.         Demonstrate the professional use of self through various dynamics that address the development of personal and professional values and ethics.

 

5.         Demonstrate cultural competence in the implementation and evaluation of services for oppressed populations in professional social work settings.

 

6.         Understand and utilize appropriate group communication and leadership skills when working with diverse client populations, colleagues, and organizations.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:

 

This course utilizes a lecture/discussion format with emphasis on student group work and processes. Students will be expected to work along with the workbook for each chapter as a preparation for class discussion. Outside speakers, videos, and field trips may be used to supplement classroom discussion.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES:
  (Attendance/Punctuality)

 

Professionalism refers to any oral presentations, class preparation and participation, and attendance. Two excused absences are allowed if the student notifies the instructor in advance. Unexcused absences will result in point deduction of the professionalism grade. In addition, any student who misses up to 25% of the classes will have their grade lowered one complete letter grade. Makeup exams are considered for students who have notified the instructor in advance with an approved excuse. Incomplete grades are given on rare occasions when the student is near completion of the course and is unable to complete assignments before the end of the semester due to an approved reason.

 

ASSIGNMENTS/ DUE DATES:

 

Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the due date of assignment. After the assignment due date, work will be accepted if the instructor is notified in advance, to exceed no later than one week.  Reading and workbook assignments are considered preparation for the lecture period; the student is responsible for all material assigned.

 

STUDENT EVALUATION:

Assignment I

 

Client Evaluation and Analysis: From your Practicum experience choose a macro problem that requires additional understanding and evaluation.  Read at least three research articles, of which one must be by a social work researcher.  Discuss what is known about the issue and how you would apply these findings to your practice situation.  This short paper should not be more than 3-5 pages.   (20 pts. – due Feb. 11th)

Assignment II

 

Interactive Group Project Assignment: Choose a macrosystem issue that indicates unmet needs that require social work assessment and intervention.  Discuss the problem in terms of the following interventive roles and processes: (1) community development, (2) social action, (3) program development, (4) social planning and (5) organizational development.  Include a presentation of the critical analysis of the change process.  This will be a group project of three to four students and will be a teaching/ learning assignment.  You will be graded on the thoroughness of the project, the creativity of the presentation and the evidence of preparation and research into this assessment and intervention of a macrosysten issue ( 30 pts. -  Due the last two class sessions).

Assignment III

 

Position Paper: You have been hired as consultant to your field organization to make recommendations for improved performance of the agency.  Because of your knowledge, skills and expertise in the areas of leadership theory, administration literature, organizational development, and performance technology combined with your overall assessment and analytical training, you are considered the ideal candidate for this job. You will write a position paper with 1) literature review in the above areas 2) agency description 3) agency analysis supported by the literature review and 3) a plan for change including steps, time frames and measurable outcomes to be implemented within 6 months, one year and 3 years of your agency analysis and proposed plan. This will be a 10 to 12 page paper written in APA format, including at least 10 references to support the knowledge base for this paper. (40pts. Due April 14th )

 

The student will be evaluated by one group project , a short paper and a position paper, and professionalism and participation. All written assignments are expected to presented in the APA format, double-spaced, with 12 point font. Points will be taken off for flagrant grammar errors and poor organization. Students with challenges in college-level writing composition are encouraged to utilize the writing lab for assistance. Rough drafts of written papers may be presented to the instructor for content critique at least one week prior to the assignment due date.

 

Performance  will be based upon standard definitive grade values as indicated below:

 

90-100 = A                              60-69.99 = D

80-89.99 = B                           Below 60 = F

70-79.99 = C  

 

Grades will be determined as follows:
