 College of Liberal Arts

The College of Liberal Arts has a number of events planned for the Fall Semester. Galaxy of Stars has three shows scheduled, Jana Jae, The First Lady of Country Fiddle on Friday, September 10, The Nylons, an acapella singing group on Friday, November 12 and Red Hot and Blue Christmas, a Branson Holiday Spectacular on Thrusday,  December 9. Tickets and more information on those shows can be obtained at 458.2075.

The Theatre program will open its season with a children's show, "Jack and the Beanstalk" on September 1-3 in the Center for the Performing Arts. The Art program will hang its opening show in the NSU gallery on Labor Day weekend. It features the work of retired NSU professor R.C. Coones. In October the Social Work Program will host a Child Welfare Conference, and in November the Department of Social Sciences will participate in G.I.S. day, with exhibits and activities all over campus.  Also, throughout the fall the Music program will present concerts and recitals including the Northeastern Oklahoma Symphony, visiting jazz musicians, and our own students. And on August 28, in the Playhouse, Kelli Doolen and the Downtown Country Band will perform.

College of Business and Technology

State Farm continues its partnership with Northeastern State University with a gift of $75,000. The addition of the State Farm Foundation Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Certification Program means Northeastern will be able to provide the only undergraduate level CFP board registered program in Oklahoma.  The distinguished entrepreneur lecture series continues this year with the first of two speakers scheduled on September 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the Net Auditorium.  The speaker will be the internationally renowned interior decorator Charles Faudree.

The College of Business has submitted the self study for ACBSP Reaffirmation.  The Site Visit for ACBSP Reaffirmation of Accreditation will be October 24-27.  NSU will be embarking on their third experience with EdVenture Partners.  Previously, a 2002 NSU campaign resulted in the FBI adopting a recruiting slogan developed by NSU students -- “Freedom Matters” -- for billboard advertising in the Oklahoma City area.    This year, students will be developing and implementing a promotional campaign to recruit management level employees for the Transportation Security Administration.  The instructor for the class is Dr. Michael Landry, NSU associate professor of marketing.

Center for Tribal Studies

The Center for Tribal Studies announces that Northeastern State University will be featured in the upcoming College Guide Edition of Winds of Change Magazine in September.   Articles highlight cross-cultural issues of interest to both Native and non-Native people and focus on career and educational advancement for both students and professionals.  The NSU Chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society is one of the largest and most active in the nation. Sara Barnett, a 2004 NSU Outstanding Senior, currently serves as chapter president.  The NSU sponsor, Jan Grogan, was honored at the 2004 National AISES Leadership Conference in Albuquerque with the distinction of being named AISES National Advisor of the Year for the second year in a row.  Information on Winds of Change College Guide can be found at www.winds.uthscsa.edu. For more information on activities of the Center for Tribal Studies, call extension 4350 or email tribalstudies@nsuok.edu.  Mark your calendar for the 33rd Symposium on the American Indian, April 13-16, 2005.

American Democracy Project

Northeastern State University is kicking off its participation in the American Democracy Project this fall.  The goals of the ADP, co-sponsored by the American Association of State and College Universities and the New York Times, are to raise the level of civic engagement among college undergraduates and recognize the importance of civic engagement education as part of higher education’s mission.  One of the big events of the semester is a visit to NSU by the MTV Rock the Vote Tour, which is scheduled for Friday, October 8.  The event will include performances by well known groups (at least to our undergraduates) and will provide the opportunity for local campus organizations such as VOICE, Northeastern Student Government Association, Northeastern Activities Board, and the ADP to highlight their civic engagement efforts.

Eric Hellstern of The New York Times will be on campus Tuesday, October 19 to conduct a faculty development workshop on how The Times can be used in the curriculum as a civic engagement tool.  The Times offers a broad based college readership program.  The ADP will also be sponsoring an event on election night, Tuesday November 2.  This nonpartisan event will be a fun celebration of the American democratic process.
