Innate meaning existing at birth.
  • Skin - acts as a barrier
  • Secretions - e.g., lysozyme
    • Lysozyme:  An enzyme that is found in phagocytes, neutrophils, and macrophages, as well as tears, saliva, and other bodily secretionsnwhich destroys bacteria by breaking down their cell walls.
  • Epithelium - motile cilia help expel foreign material
  • Colonization by harmless bacteria keeps pathogens in check
